Baby Update: Your Pregnancy Questions Answered

The house is clean. The laundry is (mostly) done. The dogs have been walked and bathed. My work laptop is stowed away for the evening. Dinner is in the crockpot (chicken marsala minus the mushrooms, topped with goat cheese and sundried tomatoes). Michael Buble is playing in the background (duh) and I’m ready for a relaxing evening with Dave…or maybe an evening spent hanging those last few picture frames (sorry, babe).

Because you probably don’t care to read about any of the above in detail, I thought I would take today to answer some of the questions you guys have sent me regarding Baby A.

  • What will Baby A’s name be?

Atlas Luke Andrews. Yes, we know Atlas means a collection of maps. Yes, we realize Atlas is the name of a Greek mythological character. Yes, we still really like the name.

  • How much weight have you gained?

24 pounds. But I think we should subtract 10 pounds from that. A lot of that has got to be in my boobs, and those shouldn’t count against me. In all seriousness, some days the added weight gets to me mentally but most days I don’t give a hoot about the scale.

  • Are you still working out?

Definitely not like I used to. I have a pretty severe pain in my groin and hip when I do any type of  extreme forward motion (like lunges or running) and my doctor told me I need to lay off the intense exercise to avoid causing long term damage. I walk about 2 hours a day with the dogs and I try to do a light circuit (mostly upper body) 1 or 2 days a week. I also try to find other little ways to sneak in activity, like taking the stairs up to my apartment during the afternoons and choosing to walk to and from my errands, rather than catch a cab. So, I’m staying active…but I’m not running 5 miles a day and doing burpees like I was in January.

  • What pregnancy symptoms are you experiencing?

Groin and hip pain are probably the biggest annoyances, mainly because it leads to me waddling like a duck most days. I lose my breath pretty frequently because my lungs are a bit cramped, which makes me lightheaded and nauseous. I have to pee all.the.time. My back is also pretty sore at the end of each day. My baby boy is healthy though, so I’m not complaining. I’ll waddle to the bathroom every 30 minutes for the next 5 weeks with a smile so long as my baby boy is healthy and happy.

  • Are you having any food cravings?

My cravings are all over the place. I crave spinach and peppers. Guacamole (but only with giant chunks of avocado present – it can’t be over mashed).  Cold Stone birthday cake ice cream with graham crackers and marshmallows (that may not have anything to do with the baby). Juice. Warm chocolate chip cookies (again, may not be baby related).

Here is an excerpt from a conversation had with Dave over the weekend.

Me: I’m craving chocolate covered potato chips.

Dave: Where do we get those?

Me: I think Trader Joes sells them. I’ll find out.

**2 minutes later**

Me: They do. Can we go to Trader Joes?

Dave: Sure. If that’s what the baby wants. Let’s go.

*2 minutes later*

Me: Actually, the more I think about it…chocolate covered potato chips sounds nasty. I think I would rather have a caprese salad.

Long story short, we ended up getting Mexican.

  • What are you most looking forward to?

With approximately 5 weeks left to go, I find myself daydreaming about the following things…

  • Running, hardcore workouts and bikram yoga
  • Trying out new NYC fitness classes like Soul Cycle and Physique 57
  • Sleeping through the night without waking up to pee (don’t ruin it for me. ignorance is bliss)
  • Eating tuna
  • Wearing all my normal clothes again (although, I will miss my elastic pants)
  • My belly button going back to normal
  • Putting on my shoes without groaning or asking Dave for help
  • Wine

We got to meet our new doctor yesterday and I absolutely love her. I’ll be full term in less than 3 weeks, which is hard to comprehend. The doctor did an impromptu ultrasound and let us see our baby boy and he is head down and ready to go.

More than anything, I am looking forward to letting our family and friends know when I go into labor (has to be the most exciting phone calls we’ll ever make), holding Atlas in my arms, kissing his cheeks and watching Dave fall in love with him.

But in the meantime, let me waddle to the kitchen and dish up our plates. Dave is home from work and I’m ready for some family time (even if it doesn’t include wine). I’m thinking those picture frames can wait to be hung until the weekend.

Okay, now I have questions for you guys! What is your parenting/baby advice? What are you craving lately?
