This all black look with a utility vest has been a staple look for me the last 2 years and every time I wear it Dave always says I ‘look like a New Yorker.’
Shirt // Denim (mine are a splurge but there’s a less expensive version here and here) // Similar Utility Vest (also really love this one with the hoodie) // Adidas (I ended up buying a kid’s size since they run big, so I saved about $15 on mine)
With temperatures finally dropping a bit in Georgia, I returned to this tried and true look, only this time I swapped my typical booties for my new adidas shoes (because I’m obsessed with them and I’m wearing them every chance I get and I only wish I had these in NYC because these would have been terrific for walking the city).
Whenever Dave says I look like a New Yorker I always make him clarify what kind of New Yorker he thinks I look like. After living in the city, I’ve come to the conclusion that looking like a New Yorker could be considered a huge compliment or a serious insult. One of my favorite things to do in the city was people watch and I always felt like people in the city had the best street style. Whenever we would walk around SoHo I would notice how everyone seemed to look casual, but still so put together and edgy. And when we would walk around Lincoln Center or the UES I would see people dressed like they just stepped out of the pages of Vogue. But then we also saw people that looked homeless, but the designer bag on their arm insinuated that they probably lived in a very nice apartment but their style was just sloppy. I can’t tell you how many times Dave & I would look at each other on the street and ask, “WHAT is that person wearing?!” SO, all that to say…whenever Dave says I look like a New Yorker I’m all, “You better not be referring to that New Yorker we saw on West 93rd that day with birds in her hair.”
Anyways, this is one of my go-to looks because it is comfortable and functional. The utility vest is amazing because I love having lots of pockets for my phone, money, Andi’s pacifiers, Atlas’ little toy trucks, etc. I’m basically the mule that holds all the things.
It’s one of my ‘mom uniforms’ for sure, but I love the edgy vibe the ripped denim adds to the look.
(This is the face Andi Rose gives us when we tell her not to touch something – Lawd help me.)
(I seriously cannot get over how big Atlas looks on his new bike.)
I wish I looked as cute in my black leggings as Andi Rose does in hers. Her little moto leggings kill me every time she wears them. And if you’re wondering what I’m doing in the photos below, I’m fishing acorns out of Andi’s mouth. She puts everything in her mouth so I’m constantly reaching my fingers in her mouth saying, “Spit it out, Andi Rose! Spit it out!”
Judging by her little grin, I would say she likes this game she plays with me a whole lot more than I do. But that’s basically what motherhood is…Fishing things out of your kid’s mouth. And replacing batteries. And washing clothes. If you can do those 3 things well, then I would say you’re pretty much ready for motherhood. 😉
And one more random story in this post because who doesn’t love a good rabbit trail? I remember wearing this vest in Manhattan while walking the dogs one day and I had my phone in my pocket and my phone fell out, but I didn’t realize it until after I got home. A kind woman found my phone in the park and answered it when Dave called and she said I could come pick the phone up from her office. She worked on 5th Ave in this super swanky art gallery and I showed up to get my phone dressed in an outfit similar to this, only my hair was in a greasy top-knot and I had a baby strapped to my chest in the baby b’jorn. Everyone at the gallery was in really dressy clothes…and there I was in my ripped denim and utility vest and I was so wishing I was invisible, but Atlas was crying (because that’s what he did as a baby) so everyone was staring and oh.my.gosh…just one of those moments I won’t forget. BUT, YAY for nice people who find phones and return them!
Question of the Day: Have you ever been to NYC? What did you think of people’s street style there?
Alternate Question: What’s your go-to uniform?
