Friday Favorites

Hooray for the weekend! I’m pretty pumped for the Superbowl. And by that, I obviously mean I’m pretty pumped to eat an obscene amount of buffalo chicken dip. I don’t even know who is playing in the Superbowl. I want to say Denver is in there, but don’t quote me on that. But who really cares because BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP!

Anyways, before I slip into a food coma for the weekend here are some of my recent favorite things!

I really really love this workout. I did this on Wednesday morning and it kicked my butt in the best way! I actually love running hills. I mean, I hate it because it makes me feel like I’m going to die while I’m doing it, but I love the way I feel when I finish. And I really do think the secret to running faster is running hills. But sometimes I don’t have time to run out to an actual hill, so just heading to the treadmill is easier and faster and because the incline changes so frequently during this run, I find the 30 minutes spent running goes by super quick! If you want a challenging treadmill workout, definitely give this one a go. And obviously, adjust the pace to match your normal speed. I just aim to run the hills slightly faster than a comfortable pace.

I’m currently obsessing over all things peppermint flavored. I’ve been mixing peppermint extract + 1 scoop chocolate complete + ice + vanilla almond milk + a spoonful of the Williams Sonoma Peppermint Bark Hot Chocolate mix (don’t judge me) together in a blender and it taste like a peppermint milkshake. If you try this, only use a tiny drop of the peppermint extract though – a little goes a long way.

Like Christmas in a cup, I tell you.

I blame NYC for my recent leather obsession. After I saw 3 different girls wearing leather leggings in Soho one day I was all, “OMGosh – leather leggings are so in and I’ve got to have a pair because that’s what the models in Soho are wearing. I hope I can find a pair to match my diaper bag.”

These leggings are surprisingly comfortable and I think they would make for a great Valentine’s Day Date outfit. Fun fact: I put on a dress to go to brunch the other day and glanced in the mirror and was like, “What the heck is wrong with this outfit? Why does this look hideous? Oh MY gosh! It’s my legs – they are whiter than the snow outside. It’s almost blinding. That is what is wrong!” I immediately changed into leggings and am now researching the best self-tanning creams. Anyways, if Dave & I were the kind of couple that went out on Valentines Day, I would totally wear this outfit again. We aren’t that kind of couple though. I’ll be in sweatpants eating a cookie the size of my face on Valentines Day if all goes according to plan. We are low-key like that.

Hooray for Atlas not being sick anymore! That’s actually my most favorite thing from this week! Healthy kids (minus Andi’s teething). So incredibly grateful for the gift of health. Since the kids were in better spirits and the weather wasn’t frigid, we played outside this week. Atlas loves to race Ob and it it is hilarious. He wants to beat her so bad so the whole time they are racing he is yelling, “Oooobbbb! Slow Down! Wait for Atlas!”

I’m not sure he fully understands the concept of racing, but it is so fun to watch those 2 together.

There were a couple of moments this week where Atlas sat with Andi Rose and genuinely enjoyed her. Since Andi is crawling and all over the place now he’s starting to view her as a real human, I think. I found him sitting and laughing with her a few times this week and it about made my heart explode. He must have got bit by the love bug this week because he was giving out lots of kisses too. I just love watching their relationship grow! It is one of my favorite things in this life. I hope and pray they always have a steadfast bond.

All the Fruity Things

The euphoric feeling that overtakes me when I stroll the Easter candy aisles at Target is actually hard to describe. I’m like a kid in a candy shop (sorry – couldn’t resist that pun).

Easter_CandyI finally realized I timed this pregnancy perfectly. I’ve been craving all the fruity/gummy/sour candy since getting knocked up and what better time to buy candy than Easter? There’s currently 4 aisles filled with Easter candy at Target and that’s been my happy place the last few weeks. I snagged a few bags of these starburst jelly beans last week and I suggest you do the same. If you find the sweet and sour starburst jelly beans, get those too. Trust me. And while we are discussing jelly beans, can I just tell you that Atlas can enjoy 1 jelly bean for 25 minutes. ONE! It takes him longer to consume 1 jelly bean than it does for me to consume the entire bag. And he only likes the blue ones (or as he calls them “boooo”).

Since my fruit cravings are going strong, I’ve been infusing fruit into my water.

Fruit_Infused_WaterStrawberry + watermelon + lime + ice + water = the taste of summer. I think this would also be delicious with mint added in.

Since I’ve been loving the fruit flavored water, I purchased this sparkling water on a whim from Whole Foods and I was surprised by how much I love it.

Watermelon_waterIt is sweet, but not overly sweet. And I actually like the fizz (I don’t normally like bubbly things). It makes me feel fancy. It also sort of reminds me of a cocktail. That should tell you how long it has been since I’ve had a proper cocktail.

And while we’re talking fruity liquids, I’ve got a smoothie recipe you should try.

Green_Machine

  • 1 banana
  • 1 green apple, chopped (I leave the skin on)
  • 1 handful spinach
  • juice of half a lemon
  • cold water

Throw all that in a blender and voila! You’ve got a sweet and tangy green smoothie. Atlas actually drank some of this, so it is kid approved. I wake up in the morning craving this. Well, this and jelly beans.

Before I sign off, I want to show you these flowers Dave got me last weekend. I love seeing all the IG pictures of fresh flowers people are posting lately so I couldn’t resist sharing a picture of these when they showed up in my house.

FlowersAren’t they gorgeous? From time to time, Dave will surprise me with chocolate or candy (because rule #1 is know your audience – duh), but this week he changed it up and brought home flowers. I can’t get over how pretty they are and every time my eye catches them, I smile. They remind me that spring is coming…and that I married a marvelous man. 🙂

Medicine Ball Circuit + Cheesecake Smoothie

Hello Hello! Today has flown by! I was so busy at work I didn’t even have time to look at the clock. I guess that’s a good thing, right?

This morning began with a workout on my back porch and this piece of equipment was the star of the show…

I did a 30 minute circuit workout that incorporated a lot of exercises with the medicine ball. I’m not sure if it was the heat and humidity or the intensity of my workout, but I was a sweaty mess by the time I finished!

Weighted medicine balls are some of my favorite pieces of at-home workout equipment. They are easy to store (in a closet, under a bed, etc.) and very functional. For today’s workout, I used a 10 pound medicine ball for the exercises notated with an asterisk below. You may need to use a heavier/lighter medicine ball depending on your fitness level and goals. I also used my new TRX equipment and a set of 10 pound free weights for a few of the exercises.

After my workout and a shower, I was ready to get creative in the kitchen and make breakfast. I picked up a cheesecake flavored Jello packet at the grocery store Sunday on a whim and decided to put a little bit in my smoothie this morning.

This is one of the best decisions I’ve made in 2013.  My smoothie tasted like a dessert. Enough said. I threw the following into the blender…

  • Almond Milk
  • Handful of Frozen Strawberries
  • 1 Frozen Banana
  • 1 Tablespoon Cheesecake Jello Powder
  • 1 Scoop Protein Powder

I mixed all that up and poured it into a cup to drink on my way to work. It was gone before I pulled out of my neighborhood. I basically drank it in 1 big slurp.

So stinkin’ good! Cheesecake flavor Jello. Buy it. Put it in your smoothie. Thank me later.

Now, I need your help! I won an iTunes gift card Saturday via Kate’s blog, Quarter Century Southern Living. Kate is one of my favorite bloggers and she also happens to have one of the cutest dogs on the planet. Seriously – I want to take Ob to Texas for a puppy play date with Nola…and then take Nola home with me. And maybe leave Ob for Kate. 75% Kidding.

Anyways, I never win anything so I’m crazy excited to use my gift card! I’m going on 82 years old and I live under a rock so I have no clue what the kids are listening to these days. I listen to country, Michael Buble and Hanson during most of my runs. This is where you come in!

Spinach Smoothie

As your friend, I’m asking you to trust me on this…

You need to add spinach to your next smoothie. It will turn your smoothie a putrid color, but I promise you won’t even taste it. Pinky swear.

Once you add in some frozen fruit and peanut butter, you won’t even realize you’re sipping on something green. Seriously – spinach smoothies are my jam! That’s right; I just said ‘my jam’ & I meant every word. More people should use that turn of phrase.

Spinach Smoothie 

Ingredients:

  • Vanilla almond milk
  • Handful of spinach
  • Spoonful of peanut butter
  • Quick cooking oats (I used slightly less than 1/4 of a cup)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • Handful of frozen strawberries
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Directions:

Toss all ingredients into a blender and mix.

*Note: I would add your protein last and just lightly pulse it in the blender. 

Drink up, buttercup!

Ingredients for a Perfect Smoothie

I have been on a smoothie kick for about…let me think…3 years. This is incredibly surprising, because I usually get burned out on foods fairly quick…probably because when I find a food I like, I eat it 23 times a week until I never want to see it on my plate again. I do the same thing with good music. I should probably take this time to apologize to my parents for making them listen to Mariah Carey’s song, Dreamlover, for most of 1994. Fortunately, my intense love for smoothies (and Mariah Carey) has remained over the years and this cold beverage is my go-to breakfast at least 5 days a week.

I make different flavored smoothies all the time, but there is one thing I always try to incorporate into my smoothie; a frozen banana. Now, this is also surprising because I don’t care for bananas (it is a texture thing) unless they’re dipped in chocolate and/or covered in peanut butter. However, a frozen banana makes all the difference in the world to me when it comes to smoothies. It makes my smoothy extra creamy, almost like a milkshake…okay….so the term ‘milkshake’ might be stretching it, but you catch my drift.

The next thing I must have on hand is vanilla almond milk. I don’t care for milk (unless we’re talking ice cream or milkshakes, then that’s a horse of a different color), but I absolutely love vanilla almond milk. It makes my smoothies so much more flavorful and sweet.

 

 

I made a strawberry and banana smoothie this morning & I threw the following ingredients into my blender:

  • Vanilla Almond Milk
  • Vanilla Flavored Greek Yogurt
  • Dash of Honey
  • Slow Cooking Oats (←really helps keep me full)
  • 1 Frozen Banana
  • 1 Handfull Frozen Strawberries
  • 1 Scoop Vanilla Whey Protein Powder

 

Another fun smoothie fact: If you use protein, you shouldn’t put your protein into the blender until all other ingredients have been well mixed. You only want to lightly pulse or stir your protein into your smoothie. You risk losing some of the nutrients when you break the protein too far down.

I should probably note that there are other foods I never tire of and they are as follows:

  • Ice cream
  • Brownies
  • Cupcakes
  • Cookies

My love for baked goods runs deep.
