Five {Beauty} Favorites

Hola! You guys know I’m all about trying new beauty products, so today I’m sharing 5 products that are new to my beauty drawer that I am absolutely loving!

I purchased a few of these items myself and some were gifts I received, but this post isn’t sponsored and all opinions are my own. If a product is on this list it is because I genuinely love it enough to use it each week and repurchase it in the future, so that means I find it worthy of being shared on here with you! Some affiliate links are included in this post, but it doesn’t change the purchase price for you, should you choose to buy anything. And if you do buy something from this list, I so appreciate your support and I hope you love these products as much as I do!

Touch in Sol Liquid Foil & Glitter Eyeshadow Duo

This glitter eyeshadow by Touch in Sol is so pretty and I love that I don’t need a brush to apply it (because I’m all about that 5 minute make up routine). I purchased this in the shade ‘Eldora’ after seeing a beauty blogger rave about it and it is a very bold and pigmented gold color (so if you don’t like bold then skip this one). I’m obviously wearing it and loving it now, but I think this will be a staple for me in the summer because it just feels ‘beachy.’ I really want to try the plum color now because I love the gold so much. Does anybody else have that problem? If I find something I like, then I want to buy it in every color.

Bumble & Bumble Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry

This spray! Oh my gosh. If I had to pick a favorite from this list, I think this would be it. Now, let me tell you that I’m not usually a fan of Bumble and Bumble. I’ve tried a handful of their products and they’ve all found their way to the trash because they just weren’t for me. Either I didn’t like the smell or they didn’t do what they claimed to do (or perhaps it was just user error and I had no clue what I was doing). So, I was hesitant to try this surf foam spray and I waited weeks before finally trying it and now I don’t think I’ll ever be without it. Bumble and Bumble describes it perfectly: A part mousse (but way lighter), part salt spray (but less gritty)—for big, beachy texture with heat-styled polish for fine to medium, healthy hair. I wouldn’t use this if your hair is already thick because you probably don’t want it to feel thicker. However, I have fine hair so I love when my hair feels thicker and has some texture to it. Also, I do NOT like using this product if I’m just blow drying my hair straight. It doesn’t feel as soft and if I am going for bone straight hair, then I want softness to it (this product makes my hair feel a bit sticky). BUT, if I am letting it air dry and just hitting it with the diffuser to add some body OR if I’m blow drying it and hitting it with the curling iron for some waves/curls then this product makes my hair hold the look so well and it adds so much volume! I wouldn’t recommend this product to everyone (Mom – I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t like it), but if you have fine hair and you want big, beachy curls with more volume then definitely give this product a go! You can get a sample of it for less than $20 if you’re on the fence about it. 🙂

Kerastase Elixir Ultime Serum Solid

I got my hair colored a few weeks ago (my grey hairs are getting out of control) and I opted out of a hair cut when I was at the salon. I haven’t found a stylist in GA yet that I absolutely love and every time I let someone near my head with scissors in this state they botch my hair (I miss my NYC girl more than words can convey). So, I’m boycotting haircuts, but unfortunately I’m in desperate need of one because my ends are so dry. The girl who colored my mane put this Kerastase Elixir on the ends of my hair and it sealed up my split ends and made it look like I just had a hair cut. I was in the middle of telling her that I didn’t need 1 more hair product when she rubbed that cream on the ends of my hair, and then I was all, “Oh, girl! Put that on my tab.” It is a solid serum that you rub together between your fingers (a tiny bit goes a long way) and then you rub it onto the ends of your hair and it just makes your hair look shiny and healthy. Now, I want to be clear – my hair is still dry and in need of a haircut and the ends are NOT healthy, but when I rub this serum on the ends it does make it appear healthier than it really is. It’s all a facade, but there’s no shame in my game.

Also, I keep having these moments where I’m like, “You know what. I’m cutting a bob. I’m doing it. I’m going for the mom cut.” And yet I’m too afraid to even let someone trim my hair. I probably need to stop investing into hair products and invest into medication because I’m CRAZY!

Skin Ceuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2

I got this lipid replenishment treatment for Christmas because I’m an adult now and adults don’t ask for fun gifts – they ask for practical gifts like anti-aging cream. This was seriously the ‘big gift’ I asked for. Is that sad or what? I’m not sad about it though because I love it. And listen – I’m going to be honest with you. I don’t understand a thing about lipids and fatty acids so I’m not even going to try and explain to you why this product is good for your skin because I don’t have a clue, but I do know that this stuff smells amazing and it makes my skin feel nourished and hydrated – like I just left the spa. I use it every night before bed and I love how it makes my skin feel fuller and healthier. I’ve been a fan of Skin Ceuticals for years and I think this is my favorite product I’ve ever tried from their line.

Charlotte Tillbury Color Chameleon Color Morphing Eye Shadow Pencil

I know there is already another eyeshadow on this short list, but I just couldn’t pick a favorite between these 2. I love this Charlotte Tillbury eye shadow pencil because I can apply it quickly without a brush. I have the shade “dark pearl” which is a smokey, purple-y, taupe-y color – perfect for brown eyes. The color is so pretty and I can make it darker if I want a more dramatic look or dial it down if I want it to be subtle. If you read the description of the eyeshadow on Nordstrom’s website you can see what shades are recommended for you based on your eye color. I’ve been on a Charlotte Tillbury kick lately and I haven’t tried a single product from her line that I haven’t absolutely loved! I’m a big fan! And now, I obviously want this eye shadow pencil in the amber color (its the other color recommended for brown eyes) because as I mentioned above – if I really love a product then I set out to collect it in every shade.

Your turn! What’s a beauty product you’re loving lately? I’m on the hunt for a good eye cream! Any recommendations?

Kit Life Giveaway + An Official Hashtag

Good morning and happy Monday to you! I hope you’re checking in today after a restful weekend. We got snowed in, which hijacked plans I had to go to Florida for a quick trip, but we made the most of the cozy weekend at home and enjoyed our first Georgia snowfall.

Last week I shared some of my personal goals for 2017. Today, I’m popping in to share one of the tools I’m using to help me stay on track with my goals!

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, then you’ve probably read about my love for a good ole’ school planner. I know in today’s world, everyone keeps their life on their digital device but I still cling to my paper calendar because I love the joy that fills my soul when I physically cross something off my to-do list. I also feel like writing tasks and appointments down by hand helps me commit them to memory. And I just don’t trust technology. The other day I accidentally deleted a note from my i-phone. Suddenly, there was a “whoosh” and it was gone and I was freaking out because I couldn’t figure out how to get it back (I’ll fast forward to the ending of that dramatic story for you: I never did figure out how to get it back).

This year I am using the Kit Life Crown Planner to keep track of my daily to-do lists, appointments, reminders, birthdays, vacations and goals. I’m already in love with this planner and we aren’t even half way through January yet!

I initially fell in love with the Kit Life Planner because the cover was beautiful. That’s right. I judged a book by it’s cover. Don’t act like you’ve never done it.

But upon opening it and diving into it’s pages, I realized this planner was even more beautiful on the inside. This calendar is designed for the girl who wants the ‘big picture’ to guide her life, rather than being driven by random daily to-do lists.

Every 3 months, there is a quarterly check-in page. This page makes you stop and think about not only where you are in relation to your big picture goals, but also what your intentions are for the next quarter. It allows you to pause and rejoice over what you’ve accomplished and also refocus on the areas that need some extra TLC. It also has a space for personal inventory, which I think is so great. You can jot down the current details of your weight, sleep, overall health, etc. I wrote all these things down on the last day of 2016 and while I was content with my weight and activity levels, I made sure to note that my sleep patterns have been atrocious, causing me to feel less than healthy. Something about actually writing that down made me realize that I’ve got to make my sleep a priority. As a result, I decided to commit to reading a book each night before bed (instead of working on my laptop in bed). I’ve already seen a drastic improvement in my sleep + I get the bonus of quality reading time, which is another goal I have in my planner – to read more books this year (I know, how cliche of me).

As far as the actual day-to-day pages go, my favorite feature is “The Big 3” box. I’m not entirely sure what the purpose of this box is, but I have personally made it my space for writing down the 3 most important things of the day – and those ‘things’ aren’t necessarily tangible tasks. For me, they are usually the things that can’t be quickly checked off, but rather thoughts I want to keep in mind as I navigate my day. So for example, one day last week I just wrote “Embrace my children” I wanted to be sure that as I went about doing laundry, responding to e-mails and paying bills that I consistently took a break to embrace my kids in the crazy, loud and messy stage they are in. Another day I wrote “Lower my expectations of this world” and that worked out nicely since that was the day I took Atlas to the dentist to find out he’s got some cavities. When I looked back at my calendar to schedule his follow up appointment, I was reminded that this world isn’t supposed to be perfect and free from trouble and pain.

The other section I love is the “Gratitude” box found on each day. I’ve been writing down 2-3 things I’m thankful for before bed in the evening. I find that it’s a positive way to end a productive day (or not-so-productive day…because let’s be honest – those unproductive days are common during this season of motherhood). This tiny section has big implications for me because it reminds me daily that I am balancing so many blessings. Whether I am running a sick child to the doctor or I’m drowning in laundry (or both), I can always find something to be grateful for. I am constantly muttering the phrase ‘balancing blessings’ under my breath as I go about my day because it helps keep my stress in perspective. Because I say it so much around my house, I’m going to start saying it on social media too. I’m going to be using the #balancingblessings this year and if you like it, feel free to use it too! I’m declaring that the official hashtag of Cupcakes n Crunches. Wait, can Cupcakes n Crunches have an official hashtag? Please say yes! Don’t crush my dorky dreams.

Anyways, other cool features included in Kit Life Planners are:

  • The Peek at the Week: This allows you to see an overview of your week ahead – I like to think of it as my ‘bird’s eye view.’
  • The Wellness Box: This is where I write my daily workout goals and dinner menu. This is also where I’m reminded that I don’t drink enough water each day (8 glasses is a lot, ya’ll). I seriously find myself chugging water at night now just so I can cross those dang water glasses off my day.
  • Monthly Page: This page appears at the beginning of each month and is filled with fitness tips and fun facts about the specific month ahead.

There are a few more features that I love, but this post is getting lengthy so I’ll wrap it up and get to the good part!

Happy New Year!

Hello & Happy New Year to you! New Years has, admittedly, never been my favorite holiday. I’m not one for making a bunch of resolutions and Lord knows I don’t love staying up until midnight. However, as I’ve gotten older I’ve grown to appreciate that ‘fresh start’ feeling that comes on January 1st. I think one of the most exciting parts of the New Year is that it feels a bit like a blank canvas. I love anticipating what’s to come, the milestones I will cross with Atlas and Andi Rose and the adventures I will have with Dave. But with that anticipation also comes some anxiety, because I know enough to know that the blank canvas won’t be filled with just happy memories. I’m learning life is a mixed bag. Joy and sorrow seem to intermingle – they aren’t as mutually exclusive as I once believed. Some parts of parenthood get easier, while other aspects simultaneously grow in difficulty. God gives…and He also takes away. In the last 3 years, I’ve birthed 2 children and Dave buried the 2 people who raised him. God gave…and He took away. And that’s life. One word can’t describe life (at least not my life), because it is beautiful and broken. It is hope-filled and hard.

As I looked at the empty pages of my 2017 calendar this morning, I couldn’t help but notice my prayer journal laying beside it. One book is blank, waiting to be filled with future plans. The other is full of prayers from the past. As I recalled all the issues/fears/dreams/frustrations/plans I brought to the Lord in 2016, I was reminded of all the many prayers He answered. There were those requests that He graciously answered with a ‘no’ because He knew better and there were requests that He answered with a ‘yes’ that far surpassed anything I could have hoped for or imagined. And as I reflected on His many provisions in 2016, I felt my anxiety over what’s to come in 2017 slowly slip away. I looked back at the blank pages of my new calendar and allowed myself to breathe in a little longer and get excited all over again about what’s to come because I trust that God is going before me and as a result, there are endless possibilities awaiting. So, whether I find myself in the midst of painful experiences or precious memories – or some weird mixture of both – I am forging ahead into the newness of 2017 with hope, gratitude and an expectant heart.

I spent the final days of 2016 in a lot of prayer and planning, trying to get my spirit focused for the New Year and I told Dave while we were at dinner the other night that God laid a verse on my heart in the midst of my planning and I just can’t shake it. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” When that verse popped into my mind my initial thought was, “Omg. Which one of my grand plans is about to be hijacked, Lord?” But then I immediately thought, “Thank the Lord. Thank the Lord that my plans don’t prevail because my plans aren’t perfect, but God, your plans are.” A few days later, God led me to Ps. 37:23-24, “A man’s steps are established by the Lord and He takes pleasure in his way. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed because the Lord holds his hand.”

I hope as you navigate your way through this year, you remember that no issue is too small or too big for God. He cares about every detail and every dream. When the troubles of life overwhelm us, may we pause long enough to look for His hand.

So, to 2017 I say….Let’s do thisssss!

Are you a resolution maker? If so, what is your resolution? I actually did make a few this year, but I think I’ll share those in another blog post. 🙂 One is to eat clean…because everyone else is doing it, so why not?!

Pajamas & Pancakes Party

Hey, hey, hey! I’m sorry things are a little quiet around Cupcakes n Crunches this week. Last night we made the game time decision to go look at Christmas lights at Lake Lanier and we didn’t get home until 10pm. I feel like despite my best efforts to immerse myself in the holiday fun, somehow the season slipped away from me, so I’m trying really hard to soak up these last few days of Christmas fun with my babies. (Although today they were super grumpy so I was all, “when the heck is nap time?!”) #fulldisclosure I’m hoping to keep the blog alive over the next few days but I may be tuning in and out and I kind of hope you’ll be doing the same and you’ll be swept away in family fun and holiday activities. 🙂

On Tuesday morning, Atlas and I headed to a ‘pajama and pancakes’ party at my friend Nicole’s house. Andi Rose stayed with Dave since she is wild and cannot be trusted in public places (or any places, really). But she sure is cute…

The kid-friendly get together also served as a cookie exchange and each guest was asked to bring 24 cookies to swap.

When we arrived in our pajamas (can I get a big ole’ ‘hallelujah’ for not having to get dressed before leaving the house?!), Nicole had pancakes, fruit and cheese for the kids to eat and a delicious frittata with a side of the most amazing cheese grits for the adults. She also had a coffee bar set up + the world’s best apple cider (it seriously tasted like Christmas in a cup and I couldn’t get enough).

After the kids ate, they played their hearts out while the women sipped on coffee and chatted the morning away (in our pj’s!!). It was such a lovely way to spend a Tuesday morning and I didn’t feel ‘guilty’ for relaxing with my girlfriends because Atlas was having a blast playing with all the kids.

Nicole also had cute Christmas crafts set up for the kids to do and then before we all left, we loaded up containers with cookies to take home.

I just wanted to share this idea on the blog, because I thought it was so adorable and perhaps some of you may want to recreate it with your girlfriends.

Oh, and the beautiful pictures of the cookies in this post were snapped by my girlfriend, Jessica. I stole them from her Facebook because the only photo I took during the party was of Atlas & his little girlfriend. Jess is super talented behind the camera. So, to summarize, I have 1 friend who is the hostess with the mostess and 1 friend who can take gorgeous photos…and my talent is…eating my bodyweight in cookies…

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! Can you even believe Christmas is only 9 days away?! I can’t. I feel like the season slipped away from me even though I’ve been trying hard to savor it. It is just passing by too quickly and I wish I could slow time down every December.

Anyways, I’m popping in today to share a quick roundup of some things I’m loving lately! As always, I hope you’ll participate in the fun and tell me some of your favorite things lately in the comments below!

  1. Kit Life Planner: O.M.G. This planner is the stuff of dreams, you guys! Here’s the thing – I’ve already been feeling the post-holiday blues with Christmas just over a week away because I know my favorite season is practically over and that makes me all kinds of sad. Is that weird? To get sad about the season ending before it actually ends? Anyways, this Kit Life planner arrived in the mail on Wednesday and it was just what I needed to get me excited for the New Year. After flipping through the beautifully crafted pages of my new planner I was pumped for 2017 and the goals that will make their way onto those pages. I know so many people use their phones and computers now for calendars, but I still prefer a handwritten planner. I’ve used an Erin Condren planner + an Emily Ley planner in past years (I prefer Emily Ley’s layout over Erin Condren’s, but I loved designing my own cover of the EC planner), but I think this Kit Life planner will earn the title of my favorite planner ever in 2017. It has a unique focus on healthy living and practicing gratitude and the cover is so gorgeous. If you are a handwritten planner kind of girl, then definitely check out Kit Life planners. #swoon
  2. Bare Minerals Matte Foundation: My face has been breaking out a lot lately (I’m pretty sure its because I never sleep) so I decided to switch up my foundation. I really love liquid foundations because the coverage just can’t be beat, but this Bare Minerals loose powder foundation is pretty terrific. I’ve been using it for the last 2 weeks and I feel like my skin can ‘breathe’ better with powder on instead of liquid. (Is it just me, or do you feel like liquid foundations clog your pores more than powder?) The coverage is surprisingly good for a powder foundation, although it obviously isn’t as great as a liquid. This foundation is great if you have oily skin and it also has SPF 15 in it. I wear it in ‘medium beige’ if you need a general reference. It’s lightweight, easy to apply and gives a super natural look! #winning
  3. Bare Minerals Gen Nude Lipstick in ‘Boss’: Okay, I swear this post isn’t sponsored by Bare Minerals – It is pure coincidence that 2 of my favorite things from lately are by the same brand. I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this lipstick on the blog or not, but even if I have, it bears repeating. This matte lipstick in the color ‘Boss’ is such a pretty and natural shade for winter and it stays on for a long time. It is a bit drying, so I’ll warn you of that. I have to wear a lipgloss over top of it to prevent my lips from looking too dry. But I’m not alone in my love for this shade because it is sold out or backordered everywhere. I got it for my mom today and I got the last one they had in the store and it isn’t shipping from Nordstrom’s website until after Christmas! The word is apparently out about “Boss.”
  4. Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast: All my fine-haired friends, listen up! I’ve got a product for you! I got this Dry Volume Blast by Living Proof and I’m loving it! I have a lot of hair but it is very fine, so it tends to fall flat most days. After spraying this all over my hair, I had so much lift at my roots (make sure you follow the directions on the can and section out pieces of your hair to spray). I’m not the biggest fan of the Living Proof brand (I want to love it so bad because Jennifer Aniston is my girl but I’ve been underwhelmed with each product I’ve tried from the line), but this product is one I’ll be buying again for sure! It smells good and even though it isn’t a dry shampoo, it kind of works to absorb some excess oil, making it perfect for hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or 2 (*ahem* or 3). If you want bigger hair, try this product.
  5. Give Them Grace: This week I started reading the parenting book entitled, Give Them Grace (it’s a Bible based parenting book, FYI). I’m not very far into it, but it has already caused me to pause and think about how I approach disciplining my children. It’s been super convicting to read, but I love the way it is challenging me and stretching me. Here’s a little excerpt from the book, in case any of my mama friends are interested…

“We’ve transformed the holy, terrifying, magnificent and loving God of the Bible into Santa and his elves. And instead of transmitting the gloriously liberating and life-changing truths of the gospel, we have taught our children that what God really wants from them is morality. We have told them that ‘being good’ (at least outwardly) is the be-all and end-all of their faith. We aren’t handing down Christianity…this other thing that we’re giving them has a name – it’s called ‘moralism.'”

Powerful stuff, right? It’s basically saying that we’ve managed to turn the Bible into a book of laws & we’ve reduced the Bible down to a “how-to” book instead of a life-giving story about redemption & a God who wants to rescue us & have a relationship with us.

And on that note, I’m off to bed! Hooray for the weekend!

Thursday Thoughts

  1. Okay, how many of you out there have a Fitbit? All of you, right? Or maybe you have an Apple watch (you fancy thing, you). I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in the U.S. who isn’t on the fitbit bandwagon, but I’ve been thinking I really want one. I want to know how many steps I take a day and how many calories I burn! But then, I think about my day and I realize I don’t need any motivation to get moving. I don’t actually know how I could add more steps into my day if I really wanted too. I run. I walk dogs. I chase babies. I make 48 trips up and down the stairs with laundry. However, what would be helpful is a watch that tracked my caloric intake and then beeped repeatedly when I had reached my quota for the day, basically telling me to shut my mouth and the fridge. Now, THAT is something I would buy. But then I would probably throw it away when it beeped at me before noon.
  2. We’ve had a little cold bug circulating through our house the last 2ish weeks and I *think* we are finally over it. #praisehands It seriously knocked us all out for a few days where we couldn’t even leave the house and when I went to do the laundry, I realized all our dirty clothes were pajamas. Normally our laundry consist of 60% workout clothes but we literally stayed in pj’s for about 8 days straight so that was all I had to wash. Which leads me to my next thought…
  3. I love working out. You could probably call me an addict. But ya’ll – working out takes serious work! I don’t ever think about it because it is such a habit for me, but after taking a 2 week hiatus from working out, I’m coming back into it this week with a new appreciation for the sacrifice it takes. I mean, when I’m not working out there is less laundry to do and more good hair days and more sleep to be had. I didn’t wash my hair for 5 days and really, it was all good until late in the 4th day. And I barely used dry shampoo. It was glorious. But that feeling I get when I finish a great run is worth all the extra laundry and ratty hair.
  4. Andi Rose head-butted me tonight before I put her to bed. I was 99% sure she broke my nose (she didn’t). I know the Bible says don’t let the sun go down upon your wrath, but I’m going to be honest…I’m still a little mad at her and I’m about to go to bed. And I put her in her crib right after that and walked out of her room for the night, so I think it’s safe to say she went to bed pretty mad at me since I normally drag out her bedtime routine with extra snuggles and giggles (because I’m a sucker). She can be so sweet, but she is so rough. Like, seriously rougher than any boy I’ve ever been around.
  5. Atlas has been refusing naps all week, unless I lay down with him (because again, I’m a sucker). So guess who has been napping everyday? I lay down with him and try to stay awake but then he wants me to close my eyes since he has to close his eyes and then the next thing I know naptime is over and I slept through the entire thing. I can’t decide how I feel about this. Atlas has also been a booger about going to bed at night. He pulls the “I’m hungry” card so I’ve been bringing him an apple to eat in bed and he loves it. And then when he’s done with the apple I’m like, “Now, go to sleep!” and then I walk out and I see his lamp flick on and I ask, “Atlas, what are you doing?” from outside his room, to which he responds, “I’m just sleeping, mom.”
  6. Okay, can we talk about this sequin dress for a quick minute? Gosh! I think this dress is so gorgeous and perfect for the holidays! I keep thinking I’m going to buy it for a New Years Eve Party or something and then I remember we aren’t invited to a New Years Eve party because all of our friends have kids and if we do end up having a party to attend, it will end at 9pm…because we have kids (and because I’m old and tired). But this dress! I think I would even wear it on a date night – but then that would require Dave & I planning a fancy date night, which could be fun! Anyways, I just love it. If you’re going to a fancy NYE party will you buy it and wear it and let me live vicariously through you? Thanks.
  7. P.S. I rarely stay awake until midnight on NYE, but I’ll probably make it up until midnight tonight thanks to the Hallmark Christmas movie that just started (it’s called A Christmas Dream & it’s all kinds of adorable)…

Your turn! Chime in below in the comments! Do you make it until midnight on NYE? Any fitbit fans out there? Tell me why you love it!
