The Little Things
Today wasn’t particularly great or exciting. I didn’t win the lottery. I had to go back to work. I am still not feeling 100% after suffering from the stomach bug. I didn’t complete a stellar long run. But yet, I found myself smiling a lot today: Smiling because of the little things.
Like getting a text from Dave with this picture….
I cannot stop laughing at that.
I also got a text from my best friend, Stacie, that brightened my day. I received a picture of her at the gym with one of my workouts printed out. It totally made my day to hear how much my bestie enjoyed doing this superset workout.
I wasn’t feeling a big lunch today, so naturally I figured frozen yogurt was the way to go.
That little bowl of heaven featured thin mint frozen yogurt, cake batter frozen yogurt and brownie batter frozen yogurt (a.k.a the trifecta of deliciousness) topped with marshmallows, chocolate chip cookies, reese’s and (of course) sprinkles. I want to live in that bowl. Like, pitch a tent in there and never leave.
On the way home from work, I chatted with my mom and thoroughly enjoyed listening to her laugh at the events of my workday. Her laugh is infectious and I can’t help but smile when I hear it.
Then I came home to 2 pups who were overjoyed to see me and I got to enjoy the Florida February weather with them before making dinner.
Marley enjoyed the weather more than the rest of the fam and went for a quick dip in the pool. Watching him swim always makes me smile…unless it is 7:45am and I’m late for work, then that is a horse of a different color.
I enjoyed dinner (jambalaya) on the couch with Dave (something we never do). We usually sit at the table because we are old fashioned, but tonight we sat on the couch indian style and laughed our butts off. We talked about the upcoming year and all the possibilities it holds and we both smiled through our entire meal…and seconds….and maybe I had thirds. Whatever. Minor details. We were hungry tonight.
Now I’m curled up on the couch with the Neiman Marcus beauty catalog, which obviously makes me smile. Dave isn’t smiling about the possibility of $300 eye cream, but I’m sure he will see it differently when he realizes the free tote I would get filled with tons of free samples upon my purchase of a product that is $125 or more! Um, that is like 2 free totes and double the samples. He’s a reasonable man. Surely he will see the logic in this.
Today isn’t a holiday. Tomorrow isn’t Saturday. I didn’t accomplish anything life changing today, yet it was still a good day filled with lots of smiles, thanks to the people and pups I love the most. I guess the moral of this story is that you should never underestimate the little things you can do to brighten someone’s day. A simple text. An encouraging word. Sharing a laugh. Sharing a bowl of frozen yogurt (I wouldn’t actually share that, but the experience in general. Thin mint fro yo is way too good to share). $300 eye cream. A few little things could make a big difference between a regular ole’ day and a great day. 🙂
What little thing brightened your day today?
