Things I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You

I heard on the Today Show this week that a recent study found moms to have only 17 minutes of “me time” each day. According to the study, “me time” is time spent doing something you want to do for yourself, whether that be painting your nails, watching TV, reading, taking a nap, etc. It doesn’t include time spent doing things like laundry, cooking, cleaning, feeding the baby, etc. As a new mom, I  just have to ask…Who are these moms that get 17 minutes a day and can they please write a book on how they do it? Preferably a book that can be read in 17 minutes? I’m pretty sure I get 2 minutes of ‘me time’ a day and I use those 2 minutes to pee.

I’ve been MIA this week because Atlas hasn’t been feeling the whole nap thing, which means ‘me time’ (aka blogging time) hasn’t happened. That’s okay though. Atlas time > Me time.

Image 2So today, let me just tell you some random things from our week that I’ve been dying to share!

First – did you guys know Anthropology is now selling athletic gear? Like adorable, ruffley (←made-up word), Lululemon style clothes that I want need in my closet? Maybe I’m late to hop on this train, but I about lost my marbles when I discovered this. This jacket? These leggings? And these? GAH! Cannot take it! Becky – you KNOW you want to treat yourself! 😉

Dave and I are doing things a bit different with our finances this year. Our goal for 2014 is to give back more and save more, which means we are spending less. Couple that with the fact that we are now operating on 1 income and I can pretty much kiss my designer workout gear goodbye. I know it is the right decision for us as a family…but man…those leggings…seriously. They tempt me.

We got bombarded with snow again this week.

ImageI’m trying hard not to hate it.

Dave and I celebrated our 3 year dating anniversary last night.

3 yearsWe celebrated by going on a snowy walk through the park with Atlas and the dogs (#parentlife). Ob & Marley hunted rats (#NYClife), Atlas slept and Dave & I laughed about the memories we’ve made together the last 3 years. I love that we still celebrate our ‘dating anniversary’ and I can’t wait to create more memories with Dave in the years to come. He really is my better half (#cliche-but-true). We put Atlas to bed early and enjoyed a fun evening together cooking, chatting and watching Modern Family (←love that show almost as much as I love Dave).

I bought a ton of produce last weekend and this is all that is left.

DSC_1320This is amazing because more often than not, when I stock up on a lot of vegetables they get put in my crisper drawer and that’s where they go to die. But not this week! This week I’ve eaten almost every piece of produce I purchased and I plan on polishing off what’s left today! And once the above food is gone, I can reward my healthy eating habits from the week by eating this stuff…

DSC_1326Okay, so clearly I already got into the peanut butter cups. Whatever. Life can’t be all spinach and sweet potatoes. I need some pb + chocolate to make it through the day.

As part of a new business venture (more on that later), I’ve been doing a lot of research the last few weeks on the intake of fruits and veggies and how the nutrients impact our bodies. My research led me to buy more produce than normal this last week and I have to say…I feel pretty good after snacking on things like avocados and peppers. Dave has even noticed a difference in his runs this week, busting out a 7:44 pace for 5 miles, which I credit to the added produce with our dinner. But cupcakes will always taste better than broccoli. Period. No way to sugar coat that (#Ilovepuns).

If you are eyeing the cutting board in the above photos, you can find it here. The kind people behind Collections Ect. sent the product to me to try and I absolutely love it. I used it over the weekend to serve some cookies on during the Superbowl and I’ve used it this week to chop veggies on and it is great. I love that it can be used as both a cutting board + a serving tray. I think the stainless steel on it gives it a sophisticated and modern look, which would make it a great housewarming gift for a bachelor. Do guys get housewarming gifts? If they do, I would get them this cutting board. It is durable, functional and easy to store (←critical if you live in NYC). I also thought these tongs, these mixing bowls and this serving dish would make great housewarming gifts. Their products are affordable, making them perfect for shopping on a budget. Check it out!

I went public this week with the fact that I have baby fever. I put it on Facebook, so it is official now. I want another one.

Babyfever

Atlas turned 4 months old this week, so expect a lengthy post about all that soon.

Image 1He got more shots yesterday, but he was tough & only cried for a minute.

Also worth mentioning from this week are the following workouts from the Nike Training Club App…

  • Razor Sharp
  • Shakedown
  • Cardio Burst

Those + a few treadmill runs have made for a decent week of workouts for this mama.

Dave ran 9 miles today as part of his training for the NYC Half. He just texted me with the screen shot of his time and calories burned with a caption that reads, “Bring on the Oreos.” Just another reason why I’m confident we will make it the long haul. #Greatminds.

And with that, my 17 minute timer (a.k.a. Atlas) is going off. So glad I got to spend my ‘me time’ with you cool people! 🙂

Here’s hoping next week is filled with more naps, more blog posts and more veggies and perhaps less hashtags. I think I went a little hashtag crazy in this post…& I’m not even 100% sure I’m using them correctly. #nerd

  1. Girl!! We NEED to be friends on FB! Why didn’t I think of that?!?!? Ask me to be a friend 😉 (Annette Perkins (Bailey))

Yes that wonderful me-time….hmmmm. Nonexistent when baby says it is. hah. I am loving my evenings again though, b/c she goes down preeeeetttyyy quickly. Which was a game changer!

2nd baby huh? That would rock! I first want to push my fitness limits for awhile & then maybe another will come 😉

Mmmmmm chocolate. I can always take chocolate. ALWAYS

    • Fb friends – Check, check!

And I’m not saying I want to get pregnant right now…but, the fall is normally a big race season for me and I’m thinking by the fall I will want baby #2 to be on the books. I want to run and get my mileage up…and there are a lot of races around September and October that I want to do…but then I look at Atlas and I think, “Oh, I want another one! I want him to have a friend close in age! I think I want to be pregnant on his first birthday.” Who knows though…I spent the first 3 months after he was born saying, “I’ll never do this again.” Bipolar, much? hahaha – Poor Dave can’t keep up.

  2. If you find those 17 minutes, can you let me know? 😉 And we are putting all of our spare $$ into the new house this year, so I am dream shopping, but can’t buy anything either! Totally sucks, right? And OMG Atlas is getting so big. Still love those chubby cheeks.

    • I can’t wait to see the new house though! What an exciting thing to put your money into! Are you just so excited for that first night in the new place? Granted, there will be boxes everywhere and you may eat pizza sitting on the floor with Luke and Abby…but you will be in your new home! Such a wonderful feeling!
I hope painting goes by quick this weekend!

  3. So how did the first comment of that FB post get cropped out? I believe it had over 10 “likes”?? You make a great mom and even better wife… we can try for the 4-some (golf team). But let’s be clear, this isn’t just an excuse to eat more cookies #pregocravings

    • I don’t need an excuse to eat cookies. You know that. You’ve seen the Insomnia bills.

And sorry I cropped out your comment. Won’t happen again. I love you…even though you’re a Facebook snob. 😉

  4. Another babe? Yes! More squishy cheeks for me to ogle at!

I’ll do a nap dance (like a rain dance, only for naps) Atlas’ way. If that doesn’t work, can’t you just feed him some Benadryl or something ;)? (<< Thank goodness I don't have children.)

    • Carly – I have asked the Benadryl question to other moms and our pediatrician so many times and they all laugh. They think I’m joking. It is a legit question in my book though. I mean…I wouldn’t give him Nyquill or anything (I don’t like to share that anyways)…but they make Benadryl for kids…so that has to be safe, right? haha

  5. I love reading your posts and virtually catching up on your life! I was so excited when I saw your running/baby post on Facebook the other night. I even read it aloud to Dan and Nola 🙂 I hope that Atlas starts wanting to take naps soon so you can have some naps too!!

    • Thanks, Kate! I miss your blog! Will you write more, please? 🙂 I want to hear how your new gig is going!

  6. Okay, yes to definitely treating myself! Those skirt/ruffle-y leggings?! I’d totally wear them to a bar 😉 And I’m glad we have the same cutting board. It’s seriously the perfect size for your tiny NYC apartment and my minuscule chicago apartment 🙂
Becky @ Olives n Wine recently posted..Something’s Gotta GiveMy Profile

    • Aren’t they the cutest? I would wear them to the bar too – making them the perfect thing to wear to the gym because in a past life that is how my Friday’s went down…gym then bar. haha – Not so much these days though.

  7. I can’t believe I’m reading about baby fever on line and not on the phone. Is this for real. We need to talk and catch up. Can’t wait to get there. What a blessing for another baby to have you for a mom. I thought you were never having kids. Haha. I love reading your blog and you. I need to check out that cutting board.

    • I thought I was never having kids either, Mom…and if Atlas hadn’t surprised us all, I would still be standing behind that statement! ha! That little boy has changed it all for me though! I love you and can’t wait to see you in 1 week!

  8. Umm that workout gear is gorgeous. Too bad I’ve put myself on a budget this year as well 🙁 I’ve actually found some really cute and affordable workout stuff at Target and Walmart!

And you better get to makin’ another kid because Atlas is the cutest! I am nowhere near ready for marriage + family, but I love living vicariously 😉
Katie @ Blonde Ambition recently posted..Fitness Friday: My Running RoutineMy Profile

    • Actually, one of my very favorite workout tops is from Target and I got it 2 years ago and it is still in good shape. It is surprisingly good quality gear!

And I live vicariously through all of you…There are definitely lots of blessings and exciting things to enjoy during all these crazy stages of life!

  9. Lol to Baby Fever. I would probably have a million babies if they weren’t so expensive and so tiring. Although, I need a good long break between kids. Hee.

As for “me time” – that’s why my kids have an early bedtime 🙂
Michelle recently posted..Current Running EssentialsMy Profile

    • We finally got Atlas’ bed time moved up to around 8pm and that has been SO nice. I usually make dinner after he goes to bed and while I hate eating so late, I really enjoy eating without holding a baby.

And I told Dave I feel like having babies is like training for a long race. Just like I prefer to run all my half marathons around the same time of the year because my mileage is already up, I think I will prefer to have kids close in age because I’m already trained to operate on little sleep and change 20 diapers a day. I’ll let you know if my logic is legit if we end up having baby #2 soon. lol – there’s a chance I’m totally wrong and it is nothing like running at all.
